Joshua 1:8 tells us, “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.”
Christian meditation is a topic often overlooked in the world of Christianity. However, you might be surprised to find that it is actually recommended and even commanded in Scripture. Let’s talk about why we should meditate as Christians and what benefits it can bring to our spiritual lives on a daily basis.
Christian meditation is about taking the time to set your mind on God’s presence and His Word. In the busyness of the physical world around us, we far too often spend much too little time in God’s presence because there are so many other (less important) things to do. We know that we should read the Bible and spend time in prayer, but we just can’t find the time to do those things. Even when we do, we often read over a passage quickly and don’t even take the time to digest it.
Christian meditation allows us to intentionally take time to think about God’s Word and cultivate a real understanding of what He says to us in the Bible. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” If we want to experience the true power of God’s Word and the life that it gives to those who understand it, Christian meditation can be a tool to help us with that. It gives space for us to truly ponder the truth of God and to let it travel from our minds to our hearts, transforming us to look more like Christ.
As we spend time in Christian meditation just thinking about God’s word and basking in His presence, we also grow closer to God. As we begin to understand more about God’s Word and more about who He is, we can cultivate a deeper relationship with Him through our time with Him. Christian meditation can greatly benefit your personal relationship with God because it allows you to take the time to slow down and truly talk to Him through prayer. It can be difficult to be in regular prayer, but when you meditate on Him and who He is, it creates the perfect space to genuinely talk to Him as He wants you to do.
As your attention is constantly being pulled a million different directions, meditation can allow you to focus your attention on the thing that truly matters: God Himself. We want to encourage you to try and incorporate Christian meditation into your daily routine and see how it works for you! Begin your journey today towards a deeper and more genuine relationship with your Creator.
